Underwear or swimsuit? The doubt is part of a new proposal that invites to use pieces of lingerie to swim

The swimsuit is one of the most reinvented garments in the history of fashion. It went through various stages in accordance with the social parameters of women's clothing, the six-piece swimsuit worn by women in the nineteenth century to the bikini revolution of the 60s, then the trikini of the 2000s and the proposals current that are a reflection of the climate of the time: functional, light and comfortable pieces that allow to make the transition from day to night.

In this category, the new trend of swimwear design that the trendsetters baptized as swimgerie, a word that comes from the combination between swim (swim) and lingerie (lingerie) is inscribed. It is lingerie suitable for swimming.

Confusion is part of the proposal: is it underwear or swimsuit? These are pieces that seem taken from our drawer of intimate clothing, but are suitable for a day of beach and sun. They have a minimalist and classic design, the seams are almost non-existent or stand out, and the color palette embraces the neutral ones, such as green plush, cement, blue and cream.

Within this trend do not take place the applications, the flown, the prints or the extravagant designs. The full suits show suggestive low backs and comfortably cover the front. The sets of two pieces incorporate practical soutiens and bombachas to face a day full of activities and movement, without even referring to the sporting spirit.

The proposal is not limited to a design aesthetic but is accompanied by a mode of use. The idea is that swimwear be a complement to day clothes, always looking ready to go from a pool party to a dinner: overlaying a jean and a jacket over the one-piece swimsuit completes the transition of the outfit. Adding a light tunic or a high-waisted skirt with a half-buttoned shirt to the bikini also achieves the effect.

These ideas began to be exhibited last June, during the North American summer, when Kendall and Kylie Jenner (the youngest of the Kardashian clan) presented a bathing line for the Revolve brand, inspired by the swimwear trend. Then, the sisters affirmed that they started with the aesthetics of the bathing suits of the 80s that their mother used, a perfect mixture between the sensuality of the underwear and the practicality of the bathing clothes.

There are national firms that already echo this proposal, such as Piccola Basics, Vandals, Deleon, Vírgenes de BA and Elle van Tok that innovate in their 18th summer. And it adds up, since in pool-type events this trend stands out and solves the wardrobe in a practical and current way, without having to change the whole completely.

The first modern women's swimsuit dates back to 1920. It was a piece of wool with a broad neckline and the lower part covered half of the thighs. This garment, wet, weighed more than three kilos, and it was a visual revolution at that time. Almost 100 years later, fashion followed the social changes and managed to respond to the new profiles that women assume and takes into account that freedom and simplification are an essential part of their behavior, a gesture to celebrate.
